REGIONAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECREASES IN DECEMBER 2016

 

CareerSource Capital Region Announces Medical and Health Care Hiring Fair on March 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane announced today that the Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties’ combined unemployment rate was 4.5% in December 2016, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. This rate is 0.2% lower than the region’s rate of 4.7% from November 2016 and is also 0.2% lower than the state’s rate for December 2016. Wakulla County’s unemployment rate remains the lowest in the Capital Region with 3.9%. It was followed by Leon County at 4.4%, and Gadsden County at 6.0%. All three regions saw a decrease in the unemployment rate compared to November 2016.

In addition to the regional unemployment rate, the Department of Economic Opportunity also provided the following positive economic indicators for the Capital Region:

  • The Tallahassee MSA was tied for the second fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in professional and business services (+5.7 percent) in December 2016.
  • Out of a labor force of 184,008 there were 8,299 unemployed residents in the region. Overall the number of unemployed residents decreased by 401 people for December 2016.
  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+1,200 jobs); professional and business services (+1,100 jobs); education and health services (+600 jobs); financial activities (+300 jobs); other services (+300 jobs); government (+300 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+100 jobs).
