Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for March 2024 

CareerSource Capital Region’s Proactive Strategy: Engaging the Future Workforce

 

GADSDEN, LEON & WAKULLA COUNTIES, Fla. – According to the FloridaCommerce, the regional unemployment rate for Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties was 3.7 percent for March 2024. 

The region’s March 2024 unemployment rate was 0.9 percentage point greater than the region’s year ago rate of 2.8 percent. Wakulla County had the lowest unemployment rate at 3.1 percent in the Capital Region followed by Leon County at 3.7 percent and Gadsden County at 4.0 percent. The region's March 2024 unemployment rate was 0.9 percentage point above the state rate of 3.3 percent. There were 7,425 unemployed residents in the Capital Region. 
  

The top six advertised occupations in the Capital Region in March 2024 were as follows: 

  • Registered Nurses 
  • Retail Salespersons 
  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products 
  • Fast Food and Counter Workers 
  • Firs-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers
  • Managers, All Other 

 

As the summer approaches, CareerSource Capital Region is gearing up to help empower youth through its partnerships with three dynamic training programs in Leon and Gadsden counties, promoting workforce-ready skills that pair real-world career experiences with life-skill development training. Recognizing the vital role of engaging the younger generation in proactive measures, these initiatives aim to equip them with the tools needed for a successful transition into the workforce.

Through efforts among CareerSource Capital Region, local government agencies, and non-profit partners, a diverse array of summer training programs has been curated to address the needs of tomorrow's job market.

"By providing quality training and mentorship opportunities, we not only empower our youth to secure meaningful internships this summer but help them build skills for future employment opportunities to contribute to the region's overall economic growth."

The summer youth training programs offer paid internships tailored to diverse interests and career aspirations. Participants can engage in hands-on workshops, gain practical experience through internships, and connect with industry experts to expand their professional networks.

The Leon County Summer Youth Program is for young adults aged 16-19. Participants work with Leon County departments for 20 hours per week, earning $12 per hour. The program is designed to empower the youth by providing vital skill-building sessions during the program’s orientation through the Learn, Earn, and Advance Program (LEAP), facilitated by CareerSource Capital Region. Interested applicants can apply for up to two positions by today’s April 19, 2024, deadline at 5 p.m. EST. For more information and to apply, visit the Leon County Summer Youth Program website.

The Children’s Services Council’s (CSC) of Leon County Summer Youth Internship Program is also available for individuals aged 15-19. This program provides a blend of workforce-ready skills and career exploration. Participants will commit to 18-22 hours per week and earn $14-15 per hour starting June 3, 2024. Interested individuals must sign up by April 22, 2024, to secure a spot in the program. Limited positions are available, and eligibility requirements apply.

Gadsden County also offers a six-week Summer Jobs Program for youth aged 14-19. Starting June 24, participants can gain valuable on-the-job training while earning $12 per hour. Applications will be accepted until May 3, 2024. During the program’s one-day orientation session, CareerSource Capital Region LEAP team will help participants with career development, introduce them to free tools they can use to learn more about jobs in different industries, wages offered for the jobs and the education and skills required. The LEAP sessions provide an engaging environment with group activities and practical learning experiences.

CareerSource Capital Region helps eligible youth learn essential skills such as goal-setting, budgeting, time management, customer service, etc. through LEAP year-round. By investing in the potential of youth in the capital area the region is laying the foundation for a prosperous and inclusive future.
