Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for January 2021

CareerSource Capital Region now offering “SkillUp®”,

a free program providing over 5,000 online job skills courses to local residents

           

TALLAHASSEE, FL– According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the regional unemployment rate for Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties was 4.9 percent for January 2021.  This rate was 1.3 percentage point higher than the region’s year ago rate of 3.6 percent and is 0.4 percentage point lower than the state rate of 5.3 percent.

 

Wakulla County’s unemployment rate remained the lowest in the Capital Region at 3.7 percent. Leon County followed at 4.8 percent, and Gadsden County was at 6.1 percent. There were 9,120 unemployed residents in the region.


The top six advertised occupations in the Capital Region in January 2021 were as follows:
 

  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing Except Technical and Scientific Products
  • Software Developers, Applications
  • Managers, All Other
  • First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers
  • Retail Salespersons
  • Registered Nurses

 

In an effort to increase the skills of the region’s workforce, CareerSource Capital Region (CSCR) has launched its “SkillUp®” program. Through this online platform, Career Seekers in the capital area can take online classes, explore career pathways, and even prepare for various industry-recognized certifications, all for free.

SkillUp® provides over 5,000 courses from Skillsoft, a nationally recognized training provider of workplace, business, technical and IT courses.

Individuals looking for a first job, a new job, or to advance in their chosen field, can take advantage of this career enhancing training. SkillUp® delivers flexible, self-paced learning that can be accessed from anywhere with a high-speed internet connection, 24/7. Users will complete a self-assessment of their skills, identify skill gaps, and automatically receive recommended courses to remediate those gaps. Career Seekers can train in essential workplace skills, study job interview talking points, and search for employment opportunities.

Some of the available training topics include Microsoft Office programs, Effective Customer Service, Project Management, Leadership, Critical Thinking, CompTIA, and many more.
