Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for August 2022

More than $430,000 in Paid Internships Available for Eligible Teens and Young Adults

TALLAHASSEE, FL – According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the regional unemployment rate for Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties was 2.8 percent for August 2022. The region’s August 2022 unemployment rate was 1.5 percent lower than the region’s year ago rate of 4.3 percent and was equal the state’s rate of 2.8 percent. Wakulla County’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the Capital Region at 2.3 percent. Leon County followed at 2.8 percent. Gadsden County was at 3.5 percent. There were a total of 5,558 unemployed residents in the region.

The top six advertised occupations in the Capital Region in August 2022 were as follows:

  • Registered Nurses
  • Software Developers, Applications
  • Retail Salespersons
  • Managers, All Other
  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products
  • First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers

More than $430,000 is available for teens and young adults (ages 16 –24), who are not enrolled in high school or college and have low household income, through paid internships. These internships, offered through CareerSource Capital Region’s LEAP program, offer opportunities to learn new skills while earning a paycheck to those who live in Gadsden, Leon, or Wakulla counties. Previous experience is not required.

Several of the current opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teacher Assistant
  • Autobody Technician
  • Construction Assistant
  • Dry Stocker
  • Office Assistant
  • Retail Associate

In the capital area, a lack of education and skills prevents many teens and young adults from entering the job market. In this program, eligible young adults have the opportunity to enroll in soft skills & financial literacy curriculum and paid internships of up to 480 hours, earning up to $6,242 each.

Statistics indicate that there are 624 disconnected youth between 16-19 not in school, not high school graduates or are either unemployed or not in the labor force in the capital area (Chmura JobsEQ). Although statics are not currently available, if individuals ages 20-24 who are not in school, not high school graduates or are either unemployed or not in the labor force are added, there are likely more than 1,000 residents in the capital area who are likely eligible to participate with LEAP.

By participating in the LEAP program, the paycheck isn’t the only benefit. Young adults gain:

  • Real-world work experience
  • Improved interpersonal communication skills
  • Career choice advice and educational guidance
  • Mentors & role models
  • Connections for future career opportunities
  • Resume building for future jobs or school applications
  • Interview practice

“We are looking forward to using these dollars to help teens and young adults in the capital area transition from having no skills or experience into good paying jobs, in a field they enjoy,” said John Hershey, Managing Director of C2 GPS at CareerSource Capital Region.  “If you know of someone in this age range who is not in school, please have them contact us.  We’d love to help them grow into a career.”
