Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for AUGUST 2020

CareerSource Capital Region offers online and in-person job coaching

& career guidance at no cost.

 

TALLAHASSEE, FL – According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the unemployment rate in the CareerSource Capital region (Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties) was 5.6 percent in August 2020. Wakulla County had the lowest unemployment rate (4.2 percent) in the CareerSource Capital region followed by Leon County (5.6 percent), and Gadsden County (7.0 percent).The overall rate for the region was 2.2 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 3.4 percent. The region's August 2020 unemployment rate was 2.1 percentage point lower than the state rate of 7.7 percent. The labor force was 178,111, down 8,577 (-4.6) over the year. There were 9,958 unemployed residents in the region.
 

The top five advertised occupations in the Capital Region in August 2020 were:
 

  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products
  • Retail Salesperson
  • Software Developers, Applications
  • Managers, All Other
  • Registered Nurses

 

The top five direct employers by online ads in the Capital Region in August 2020 were:

  • State of Florida
  • HCA
  • Florida State University
  • TMH
  • Pearson

 

Although the regional unemployment rate remains high, the number of jobs available within the capital area also remains high with over 500 vacancies currently posted in Employ Florida.

Today, individuals looking for work in the capital area have access, like never before, to both in-person and online career assistance at CareerSource Capital Region, where the COVID-19 crisis has redefined operations.

On-site and remote assistance is available to you online, by phone and email. Appointments can be scheduled at any of our locations by simply calling.”

Centers are open to individuals with appointments and required PPE including facial coverings.

Assistance is available to individuals who do not wish to schedule an in-person appointment through a variety of methods. Career Navigators are available to meet one-on-one with career seekers by phone or Zoom.  Online, self-paced assistance is available to career seekers through virtual workshops, listed on the organization’s website, with “live” facilitators and through Career Edge for resume writing advice, interview practice, and job success training. CareerSource Capital Region also hosts frequent virtual recruitment events and hiring fairs for local employers including one for Tallahassee Memorial Health Care and Sodexo on September 23. And, coming soon, Metrix Learning, which will provide technical training in a variety of fields including, but not limited to, information technology/programming, business, finance, sales, marketing, transportation and logistics, as well as training to become certified in CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, American Society for Quality (ASQ), Human Resources, and Project Management. 

Further, to assist individuals who have temporarily or permanently lost their job due to the pandemic, CareerSource Capital Region is currently offering paid temporary positions through a COVID-19 Dislocated Worker Grant.  In addition, the organization has other special grants to help individuals train in high-tech manufacturing and paid apprenticeships in IT, HVAC, and Waste Water Treatment.
