LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES CONTINUE TO DECLINE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane announced today that Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties combined unemployment rate dropped to 4.6 percent in November, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The Tallahassee metro had the second fastest over the year job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in leisure and hospitality, with the current unemployment rate .8 percentage point lower than the region’s year-ago rate of 5.4 percent.

“Here at CareerSource Capital Region, we are always looking for ways to impact local economic development,” McShane said. “As we gear up to introduce more targeted hiring opportunities for employers this year, the report showing that we are still seeing unemployment decline couldn’t come at a better time.”

In November, CareerSource Capital Region and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity assisted 534 Floridians in finding jobs. So far this year, more than 7,488 individuals utilizing our services and resources have become employed.

The Department of Economic Opportunity also provided more positive economic indicators for the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area (Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon and Wakulla counties), including:

  • Wakulla County’s unemployment rate (4.2 percent) was the lowest in the CareerSource Capital Region, followed by Leon County (4.5 percent) and Gadsden County (6.2 percent).
  • Nonagricultural employment in the Tallahassee metro area was 176,900 in November 2015, unchanged over the year.
  • In November 2015, the Tallahassee metro area led all metro areas in Florida in annual job growth rate in trade, transportation and utilities.
  • The metro area’s over-the-year growth rate in leisure and hospitality (+7.3 percent) was stronger than the statewide growth rates in that industry.
  • The industries that gained jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+1,400 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,300 jobs); and educations and health services (+700 jobs).
