Career Advisors: Helping Career Seekers Land Their Dream Job

At CareerSource Capital Region, we encounter many individuals who are looking to switch careers and pursue their passions. One such individual came to the Wakulla Career Center seeking help with finding a job in Information Technology (IT) Customer Service. Despite their work experience being primarily in a different industry, they were determined to pursue a career in their desired field.

The career seeker was greeted by our Workforce Services Specialist, Kathleen Mackie. Together, they reviewed the career seeker’s resume and discussed future goals. Kathleen wanted to understand the career seeker’s experience and qualifications so that she could help them find job opportunities that aligned with their interests. According to Kathleen, the job seeker had completed the necessary IT courses, including being Help Desk Certified, at Tallahassee Community College. However, despite their qualifications, they were having trouble finding a job in their field of choice, which was frustrating for them. After her review, they explored positions in the desired field using Employ Florida. They found several careers that matched their qualifications and experience, and Kathleen encouraged them to apply. Kathleen was impressed with the job seeker's persistence in trying to find work in their field while also moving up the career ladder at the grocery store where they worked.

Kathleen noted that the job seeker was very detail-oriented but struggled to create a resume that would help them obtain their desired job. Some of their certifications had expired, but they didn't have the funds to go back to TCC to redo them. Kathleen then introduced the job seeker to our Career Advisor, Genesis Knight, who helped them identify courses that would enhance their IT knowledge and help them acquire more certifications.

Together, Kathleen and Genesis assisted the job seeker in developing a more impactful resume. They highlighted the job seeker's computer and IT internship and removed items from the resume that weren't relevant or buzzwords. They also reorganized and reformatted the resume for better readability.

Kathleen expressed her pride in the team's ability to assist the job seeker, especially with the assistance of the career advisor, Genesis Knight. "I feel proud for the job seeker who was so excited and grateful, and I was glad that we, as a team, were able to help them.

This individual followed our advice and enrolled in courses that helped them gain more knowledge in the desired field. They were able to acquire several certifications that gave them a competitive edge in the job market.

Shortly after, the career seeker reached out to inform us that they had landed a job with the Department of Children and Families as an Entry-Level IT Help Desk representative. We were thrilled to hear about the job seeker’s success. It was a testament to the importance of following one's passions and pursuing a career that aligns with one's interests. And we were glad that we could play a part in helping them achieve their goals.

At CareerSource Capital Region, we are committed to helping job seekers find fulfilling careers that align with their interests and skills. If you're looking to switch careers or pursue a new opportunity, we're here to help.
