UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECLINES IN CAPITAL REGION
Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for August 2016
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane announced today that the Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties combined unemployment rate was 4.8% in August 2016, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
This rate was 0.6% lower than the region’s rate of 5.4% from one year ago and 0.3% lower than the region’s rate for July 2016. Wakulla County’s unemployment rate of 4.1% was the lowest in the region, followed by Leon County at 4.7%, and Gadsden County at 6.3%.
“As we prepare for our Retail and Hospitality Hiring Fair on September 20,” said Kara Palmer Smith, Senior Director at CareerSource Capital Region, “we are pleased to see continued growth in the hospitality industry throughout our region.”
The Retail & Hospitality Hiring Fair will feature over 20 local employers who are actively seeking candidates for current job openings in these industries. In addition to a 0.6% decrease from August 2015, the Department of Economic Opportunity also provided the following positive economic indicators for our region:
- The Tallahassee metro area had the third fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in the leisure and hospitality industries with a growth rate of 6.7% in August 2016.
- The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+1,200 jobs); professional and business services (+800 jobs); education and health services (+400 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+200 jobs); financial activities (+200 jobs); and other services (+200 jobs).
- Out of a labor force of 178,988 there were 8,661 unemployed residents in the region.
- The region's August 2016 unemployment rate is 0.1 % less than the state rate of 4.9%.
