STEM CAREERS AT THE FOREFRONT OF GROWTH IN THE CAPITAL REGION

 

Job Growth and Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for May 2017

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the regional unemployment rate for Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties remained unchanged at 3.7% for May 2017.

The region’s rate was 0.7% lower than the region’s rate for May 2016 and 0.3% lower than the state’s rate for 2017. Wakulla County’s unemployment rate remained the lowest in the Capital Region with 3.3%. Leon County followed at 3.6%. Gadsden County was at 5.1%. 

The top advertised occupations in the Capital Region in May 2017 were as follows:

  • Registered Nurses (373 jobs)
  • Computer Systems Analysts (190 jobs)
  • Management Analysts (162 jobs)
     

“Each month, we see growth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers throughout our region,” said CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane. “One of the ways that we connect career seekers to opportunities in these fields is through our STEM Ready program.”

STEM Ready is a U.S. Department of Labor grant-funded program that provides financial aid, paid internships, and job placement assistance for career seekers interested in STEM careers. Up to $15,000 in financial aid is available for those who qualify.
