HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY GROWS BY 1,300 JOBS IN CAPITAL REGION

 

Regional Unemployment Rate Announced for July 2016

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane announced today that the Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties combined unemployment rate was 5.1% in July 2016, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

This rate is 0.5% lower than the region’s rate of 5.6% from one year ago. Wakulla County’s unemployment rate of 4.4% was the lowest in the region, followed by Leon County at 5.0%, and Gadsden County at 6.4%. The Tallahassee metro area had the third fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in the leisure and hospitality industries with a growth rate of 6.1% in July 2016.

“We’re pleased to see the growth in the hospitality industry throughout our region,” McShane said. “On September 7, we are partnering with Tallahassee Community College’s Center for Workforce Development to highlight this growth at our Retail & Hospitality Hiring Fair.”

In addition to a 0.5% decrease from July 2015, the Department of Economic Opportunity also provided the following positive economic indicators for our region:

  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+1,300 jobs); professional and business services (+1,200 jobs); education and health services (+500 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+300 jobs); financial activities (+300 jobs); and other services (+200 jobs).
  • Out of a labor force of 180,673 there were 9,162 unemployed residents in the region.
  • The region's July 2016 unemployment rate was equal to the state rate of 5.1 %.
  • In July 2016 nonagricultural employment in the Tallahassee MSA was 171,400, an increase of 3,600 jobs (+2.1%) over the year.
