CAPITAL REGION UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ANNOUNCED

Regional Unemployment Rate Decreases by 0.4% Since June 2015


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – CareerSource Capital Region CEO Jim McShane announced today that Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties combined unemployment rate was 5.1% in June, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. This rate is 0.4% lower than the region’s rate of 5.5% from one year ago. Gadsden County’s unemployment rate at 6.2%, was the highest in the region, followed by Leon County at 5.0%, and Wakulla County at 4.2%.

“We are proud to partner with local employers to meet their talent and workforce needs,” McShane said. “On August 11, we are partnering with the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners to bring a job fair to Gadsden County.”

The 2016 Gadsden County Job Fair will feature local employers seeking candidates for current job openings. Employers looking to attend can register now through August 1, by calling (850) 617-4605.  

Career seekers are encouraged to attend the “How to Work a Job Fair” workshop offered by CareerSource Capital Region’s Gadsden County Career Center on Tuesday, July 26, at 3:00pm.  At the workshop, career seekers will learn how to develop an effective elevator speech, and create a strategy for making a great first impression. In addition to a 0.4% decrease from June 2015, the Department of Economic Opportunity also announced the following positive economic indicators for our region:

  • The Tallahassee metro area had the fourth fastest annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in leisure and hospitality (+6.1%) in June 2016.

  • Out of a labor force of 180,267 there were 9,112 unemployed residents in the region.

  • In June 2016, nonagricultural employment in the Tallahassee MSA was 171,800, an increase of 3,300 jobs (+2.0%) over the year.

  • The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: professional and business services (+1,100 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+1,100 jobs); education and health services (+400 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+300 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+300 jobs); financial activities (+300 jobs); and other services (+100 jobs).
